Travel to the place...

Travel to the place
Where mind set to peace,
No one can see,
Feel us free.

Travel to the place
Where we can breathe,
Fill our desire,
We wish; we aspire.

Travel to the place
Where we have silence,
Flower of fragrance,
And nature to admire.

Travel to the place
Where we can write,
Lines of rhyme,
At any time.

Travel to the place
Where we have enough space,
Work without race,
No tension on face.

Travel to the place
Where we can dance,
Sing at glance,
Bit of time to romance.

Travel to the place
Where we spread love,
Freedom to serve
And land to move.

Travel to the place
Where we can live,
Of joy and sprinkle its grace,
And do anything, anywhere.

Suburbia

Miming our pretentious airs,
we sit on plush and padded chairs-
Our faces clothed in wreaths of smiles,
our bodies in designer styles.
Muttering Dystopian curses,
our credit cards in Kate Spade purses
With thin ideals and narrow minds,
we go about our daily grinds.
Never knowing just outside our sphere
of useless thought and crippling fear
Life is lived with great rejoice
in simple ways and joyous voice.

The Weight On Your Shoulders

I know of your strength
It's part of my life
It's held me together
on many a night

Clothed in your courage
Cloaked by your drive
Confronting each day
Never failing to strive

But there are times when-
no matter the power you wear-
troubles surround you,
bringing despair

The weight of the world
lies heavy, oppressed
even on shoulders
so stoutly dressed

So give me your burden
to carry awhile
I'll wield it, contented
in seeing you smile

Invaluable Love

Too valuable to toss aside
too good to throw away
And so you hold it deep inside
in hopes somewhere, someday-
a soul will walk across your path
who sees the world your way.

A soul who finds the beauty
in both the rainbow and the rain
A heart that finds the threads of love
in life's tapestry of pain.

And when you find that soul
you must hold on with all your might
to keep this light within your life
in days of darkest night.

Stay Strong

For those who could use it now, an excerpt from the lyrics of Stay Strong by Newsboys.  And here's a link to a live performance of the song:  Stay Strong

We've seen the tragic flaws
The tortured souls
The saints with feet of clay
Here's where sin becomes cliche'

We've come through wilderness and watched

The cloud by day
The burning sky into dawn
Have you forgotten who you are?
Did you forget whose trip you're on?

Stay strong

You are not lost
Come on and fix your eyes ahead
There's a new dawn to light our day, our day

We've gotta stay strong
You and I run
For the prize that lies ahead
We've come too far to lose our way, our way

Our Hold On The Planet

Many days, when I'm catching up on the news and it all seems to be bad news, I remember the words of this Robert Frost poem for comfort.

Our Hold On The Planet

We asked for rain.  It didn't flash and roar.
It didn't lose its temper at our demand.
And blow a gale.  It didn't misunderstand
And give us more than our spokesman bargained for;
And just because we owned to a wish for rain,
Send us a flood and bid us be damned and drown.
It gently threw us a glittering shower down.
And when we had taken that into the roots of grain,
It threw us another and then another still
Till the spongy soil again was natal wet.
We may doubt the just proportion of good to ill.
There is much in nature against us.  But we forget:
Take nature altogether since time began,
Including human nature, in peace and war,
And it must be a little more in favor of man,
Say a fraction of one per cent at the very least,
Or our number living wouldn't be steadily more,
Our hold on the planet wouldn't have so increased.

Robin Gibb, Poet

Yesterday, May 20, 2012, the world lost a great and prolific poet in Robin Hugh Gibb.  On his own, and in collaboration with brothers Maurice and Barry as the Bee Gees, Robin created some of the most beautiful and memorable songs of all time. While the music and beats are unforgettable, I always found the words even more so--as poetic as anything I've ever read by the world's greatest acknowledged poets.  In tribute to Robin, here are the words to two of my favorites.

Words

Smile an everlasting smile
a smile can bring you
near to me
Don't ever let me find you gone
'cause that would
bring a tear to me

This world has lost its glory
let's start a brand
new story now, my love
Right now, there'll be no other time
and I can show you how, my love

Talk in everlasting words
and dedicate them all to me
And I will give you all my life
I'm here if you should call to me
You think that I don't even
mean a single word I say

It's only words
and words are all I have
to take your heart away

Living Eyes

Would you believe me if I told you your tomorrow is my yesterday
But be alive
I know that we will
The world keeps on moving but I'm holdin' still

In the beginning I was far away and praying for my destiny
That would arrive
The moment you're born
For we will be here when the miracle comes

Living Eyes, when under the sun don't cry
No war in my mind
The state of my heart
Living eyes, when out in the rain will fall
The day I deny the face of my love

We are of age, we are in time
We are forever
Right now when the power is mine
I leave you heaven and the earth
I leave you never
And living to love is the reason we shine

When I been over I been under
I don't own a dream to analyze
But living eyes you know that I do
believe in the soul and the magic of you

Living eyes, when under the sun don't cry
No war in my mind
The state of my heart
Living eyes, when out in the rain will fall
The day I deny the face of my love

We are of age,we are in time
We are forever
Right now when the power is mine
I leave you heaven and the earth
I leave you never
And living to love is the reason we shine

Living eyes
When under the sun don't cry
No war in my mind
The state of my heart
Living eyes...

Every Morning

Every morning I awaken,
you in my heart and mind.
Each moment of every single day,
you're in my thoughts, I find.

Throughout the busy evening hours,
you're there to keep me strong.
A presence without which I'd fail;
a soul mate when nights are long.

At midnight, when the stars shine down
you sing to me on the wind.
Each gentle, warmly blowing breeze
a promise that you send.

In deepest night, you hold me close
even though you're far away
keep me safe from darkest thoughts
until the break of day.

Night Vigil

The sun's light fades, grows weak and dim
as evening slowly falls
Radiant stars come wandering in
to peek through dusk's misty gauze

Bright full moon then marches forth
with smiling, twinkling face,
and parts the luminescent veil
to take his rightful place

As through the night, they stand their guard
these patient stars and moon
Then, at dawn, they greet the sun
as he relieves night's gloom

Sharing The Weight

Greek Diety Atlas Carrying the World on his Shoulder.jpg

Your shoulders must seem so heavy at times
your valiant strength ready to fold.
You carry the burden of many pursuits
a mountain of dreams to uphold.

Through fears and heartaches, you offer yourself
with never a thought for the cost.
No hesitation for damages done;
for the pieces of you that are lost.

So when you are drained, lonely, afraid
feeling small in a huge world of doubt
My shoulders will be there to carry the load,
to strenthen you inside and out.

In Honour Of Shakespeare

Today being the anniversary of Shakespeare's death, I thought I'd post one of my favourite Shakespeare poems. First read this one in middle school and I've always loved it.

They That Have Power to Hurt

They that have power to hurt, and will do none,
That do not do the thing they most do show,
Who, moving others, are themselves as stone,
Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow,-
They rightly do inherit heaven's graces,
And husband nature's riches from expense;
They are the lords and owners of their faces,
Others, but stewards of their excellence.

The summer's flower is to the summer sweet
Though to itself it only live and die;
But if that flower with base infection meet,
The basest weed outbraves his dignity:
For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds;
Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds.

Soul Fit

At each and every dawn
I rise and don your essence.
Hugging me
with the warmth of a winter coat
-a perfectly-sized hand over my heart-
it protects me
from freezing realities,
from harsh, abrasive egos
whose only aim is destruction
of others' souls.

Sometimes Silence Is Better

To speak for common good is fine
and yet, still common, not divine.
If as a God you see  yourself,
leave your opinion on the shelf.

(This short little piece came out after hearing yet more ranting by Republican presidential candidates)

Waves Of Comfort

Waves erase the memories
eclipse the vibrant shore,
Hold at bay the dreaded pain
that tears at heart's soft core

And when it comes, the hurt is fierce
the rip of vulture's claw
Shredding at soul's guarded grip
to swallow in it's maw

At such times, peace seems absurd
an inaccessible feast
A hunger that we cannot sate
a goal too far from reach

But to despair, the waves are kind
They cleanse the heart's strong ache
suffuse the shore with glowing sun
leave love in sorrow's wake.

Shared Hearts

Shadows creep
                on silent feet
as day's warm light dissolves
and as the veil drops o'er the land,
so human heart does fall

We seek out comfort
              kindred souls
as faith and spirit fail
and as our minds drift far away,
towards home, on lifted sails

And sometimes,
        in our fevered thoughts,
we make untold mistakes,
which haunt us when the morning calls
and clearer views awake

And so
        we hide our human wounds
as soldier on we must
and push deep down our troubled fears
and wonder who to trust

The answer's there
       inside your heart
Search deep within and find
that all along, you've known the truth
the heart you trust--is mine.

Loneliness

Surrounded by a host of friends,
my heart feels yet alone
Although I laugh, my soul pretends
and wishes for its home.

I long for those I cannot see
thirst for their presence nigh
hunger for the touch and words
of loves beyond my sky

There's naught to do
but hold on tight-
to faces and to hearts-
keep my lonely vigil
through the night
and wait 'til pain departs.

Edgar Allan Poe: The Raven

It was on January 29, 1845 that 'The Raven', by Edgar Allan Poe, was published for the first time in the New York Evening Mirror. In honor of the anniversary I was going to post the poem, but then I discovered that so many actors with outstanding voices have read The Raven. So I thought why not post a reading of it instead. If you search for it at Youtube, you'll find that Christopher Walken, James Earl Jones, Christopher Lee and other have done it, but I couldn't resist the Vincent Price version. I've always loved Price's voice! Hope you enjoy it.

Hesitant Walk

We feel
our way to love-
hearts taking baby steps-
through fearful, uncertain minefield
of life

This is my first official foray into cinquain.  I only recently discovered poet Adelaide Crapsey and I'm loving her poetry, as well as the form.

I Carry Your Heart With Me

(e.e. cummings)

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
                                  i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

[When I'm going to be away for awhile, I post a few of my favorite poems in advance.  I only recently started reading e.e. cummings' poetry.  This is one of my favorites so far. ]

My Heart's Always Ready

My heart's always ready
when you come home
They ask-
Aren't you lonely?
but I'm never alone
My heart's always ready
Please don't ever doubt
My love is a pillar
you won't be without

When you're trapped by the world,
ensnared in her web,
battered and damaged
by unkind words said,
There's one place
you'll always be safe from the storm,
where human inhumanity
can do you no harm

My heart's always ready,
my arms ever wide,
the hearth always warm
when you come inside
So go where you must
on adventure's wide sea,
knowing your voyage
won't take you from me

Killer Thoughts

 Life bleeds out
a river of red
heartbeat silenced
demons fed

From cold darkness
the killer came
knife blade sharpened
soul black-stained

Heart unhampered
by mercy's grace,
he took the life
that filled her face
He watched it drain
with loving eyes,
this essence
that he so despised

As drop-by-drop
it touched the floor,
his anger calmed,
his thirst no more
Her body lay
in peaceful pose
as he placed
a single rose

Filled with content,
his hunger tamed,
he crept away
to hunt fresh game

Title Track

(Crowe,Cochran)

I can't tell, if I want to know,
What's on your mind,
Should I just go.
It's a long way down from here
I better start with the stairs
It's a long way down from here

You know there's other ways of speaking

Words are just the deep end
I'm not good at keeping secrets from you

But I can't tell, if I want to know,

What”s on your mind,
Should I just go.
It's a long way down from here
I better start with the stairs,
It's a long way down from here

You know there's other ways of speaking,

I can read you when you're sleeping
I can feel you when you're breathing
And breaking in two

But I can't tell, if I want to know

What's on your mind
Should I just go.
It's a long way down from here,
I better start with the stairs
It's a long way down from here

You know there's other ways of speaking

Words are just the deep end
I’m not good at keeping your secrets from you

I found myself suffering one of my typical bouts with insomnia and listening to music when I realized I had never put up the lyrics to Other Ways Of Speaking at this blog which owes it's name to the song, it's Title Track so to speak.  Unforgivable of me.  It's one of my favorite songs (and it's title track as well) off the 2003 CD by Russell Crowe & Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts.  And if you've never heard Russell sing it, you can go to my other blog, Leaves of Russell Crowe and listen here.

Homeless

Day by day
their pitying stares,
disdainful glares
and aloof avoidance
tear away
another piece
of his skeletal soul-
withering,
wasting away
in the concrete desert
he once thought of as home.
They throw food
and coins
his way,
yet none offer
what he craves most-
a warm smile
a bit of conversation
a hug-
nourishment for the soul.

Inevitable Road

Georgia's frigid winter rain
falling down upon my head,
it's cold overwhelmed
by my heart's silent dread
You made a promise you'd be home
by January's cold last light
That was hours ago
Still, you're nowhere in sight

We smiled and waved as you left
late night December 28th
We knew you'd be back
We took it on faith
It's part of life with you,
all the coming and going,
but it's not always easy
to love you not knowing

You follow the road
wherever it leads,
while we're left behind
with all of our needs
It's enough just to know
you're out there somewhere,
and thinking of us,
to know that you care

So we keep our vigil
We hold down the fort
We wait patiently
'til your ship comes to port
The choice was made for us
an aeon ago,
but we'd make no other
knowing all that we know

So our candle burns
as we patiently wait
'til the curve in your road
brings you back to our gate
